What Does BlueHost Have to Offer?

BlueHost is one of a number of web hosts that provide low cost Linux shared hosting that includes features designed to appeal to bloggers, people setting up ecommerce sites, and others who seek and inexpensive, but reliable, web hosting options, perhaps for personal sites or small or medium-sized business owners. While many of BlueHost’s offerings are standard for this niche, some of them are unusual. So we’ll review first the usual and expected and then the ones that might surprise you.

BlueHost Standard Features

There are some BlueHost features that are like many other shared hosting-focused web hosts. These include:

• 1-click install of Simple Scripts, which provides upwards of seventy free and highly desirable applications, from WordPress blogs to Joomla! and Drupal Content Management Systems (CMS) to shopping carts, such as Tomato Cart, Agora Cart, and Zen Cart to PHPbb and many others.

In addition to ease of installation, Simple Scripts offers upgrade reminders when an installed application reaches a new version, and even reminds you to make a back-up prior to doing the upgrade. Simple Scripts is accessible from BlueHost’s cPanel account control panel.

• A number of unlimited features including disk storage, domain hosting, POP3 secure email support, IMAP email support, unlimited site transfer, unlimited add-on domains, and unlimited sub-domains.

BlueHost Special Features

BlueHost offers a money-back guarantee that doesn’t end at 30 days, like many web hosts offering shared Linux web hosting, or even 60 or 90 days. It’s good “any time.”  Their support team is 100% US-based and available 24/7.

They also offer a 99.99% uptime guarantee, which is unusual in the world of Linux shared hosting, where you will find that most web hosts offer no guarantee at all for their uptime.

The have chosen to provide cPanel as their account control panel rather than vDeck, which is less well-regarded, at least by some.

The resource protection plan that BlueHost offers provides customers with some of the benefits of VPS (virtual private server) hosting, but without the cost or the customer having to take any action at all.  It’s a means to protect customers with shared hosting plans from suffering from resource hogging by others on their server, whether of memory or CPU.

The online support (called the HelpDesk) that BlueHost offers has a far more extensive knowledgebase than some other shared Linux webhosts, with hundreds of artcles and scores of video tutorials, which cover not only BlueHost operations but also help customers deal with add-ons. They also offer a user forum.

You may be interested to learn that Matt Heaton, CEO of BlueHost (as well as Hostmonster and Fastdomain) up until June 12, resigned on that day, turning the operation of BlueHost over to Dan Handy, who had been the COO at BlueHost and Hostmonster.
